Intro to Aviation Flashcards
Where do you want to wind to come from when landing?
From the front (head wind)
When was the first flight
1903 17th December
What do the horizontal stabilizers control?
the pitch
What does the vertical stabilizer control?
the yaw
What part on the vertical stabilizer controls the yaw?
the rudder
What part on the horizontal stabilizer controls the pitch?
the elevator
What is yaw?
side to side
What is pitch?
up and down
What are the 4 parts of the wing?
flaps, aileron, slats and spoiler
Where are the flap and their purpose?
Back inner side of wing, and for takeoff increases lift and for landing increases drag
Where is the aileron and its purpose?
Back outer side of wing, and it changes roll (rotates body)
Where are the slats and their purpose?
Front side of wing, and increase lift
Where are the spoilers and their purpose?
Middle of wing, and acts as speed break, helping ailerons and ground break
What is the body of the plane?
fuselage
What is the tail part of the plane?
empanage
Where does the captain sit?
on the left
Lighter than air?
aerostat
Heavier than air?
aerodyne
Most popular aerostat aircrafts?
balloons, airships and zeppelins
What is the part between airplane and engine?
pylon
Two most popular airplanes?
Boeing 747 and Airbus A320
What planes can land in both water and land?
amphibians
What is the Mach number?
speed of aircraft
How is the Mach number calculated?
object speed/speed of sound
M<1?
subsonic
M>1?
supersonic
M-1?
transonic
M»1?
hypersonic
a plane with 2 wings?
biplane
what is a short range?
less then 1500km
what is a medium range?
less then 6000km
what is a long range?
more then 6000km
what are the 4 forces that affects flight?
lift, drag, thrust and weight
What are pre-powered and powered aircrafts?
pre-powered: gliders (added energy to fly), powered: w engine
Two types of engines?
Jet with turbines and piston with propellers
Most common jet engines:
turbofan, turboprop
How can a turbine engine be classified?
Number of shafts(1,2(dual),3)
Where is there more velocity, over or under the wing?
Under, less distance = faster
Where is there more pressure, over or under the wing?
Under, creates a vacuum behind
What is the angle of attack?
The angle between the chord and the relative wind
What is the difference between dynamic pressure and static?
static when in place and dynamic when moving
At least how many job functions are there in aircraft maintenance?
at least 38
What is the main target of aircraft maintenance?
to maintain aircraft worthiness of the aircraft
What are some of the roles that aircraft maintenance can be in?
management, planning, engineering, on-site/on-line maintenance and SMS(safety management systems)
Cockpit difference between boeings and airbus?
airbus has sidestick and boeings have yoke
