What is Art History?
Seeks to understand the meaning of art from the past, understand the intentions and culture of past civilizations. (Religion, politics, myths, social values, etc.)
What do we want to know about an artwork?

What is a Patron?
The person who ordered/commissioned and paid for the work of art
Usually, artwork was made for which specific environments?
Temples, churches, government buildings, and princely residences
What is the “Cabinet of Curiosities”
In the 16th and 17th centuries, it contained small collections that included items like seashells, clocks, sculptures, paintings, and precious stones that served as a visual table of knowledge.
What was the modern idea of fine art?
Work that exists for itself, without a function, is created by an individual/genius and appreciated for aesthetic value.
What is Formal Analysis?
Concerned with physical aspects of work: Color, line, space, mass, and scale. Try to understand what the artist wants to convey. Ex: Dark colors indicate a sense of mystery.
What is Medium?
Materials used to create work of art, ex; Marble, Oil on Canvas, Bronze, Pencil
What is considered Two Dimensional Images?
Paintings, Drawings, Prints, and Photographs
What are examples of Painting Mediums?
Fresco, Tempera, Oil on Canvas, Acrlyic
What are examples of Drawing Mediums?
Pencil, Pen, Charcoal,
Crayon
What are examples of Print Mediums?
Woodcut, Etching and Engraving
Where and when were Photographs developed?
Developed in France around 1839
What are considered Three Dimensional Images?
Sculpture, Reliefs, Carved & Modeled Sculptures
What is a Low Relief Sculpture?
Figures are incised in shallow relief.
