Intro to Animals Flashcards
Characteristics of an Animal
eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, lacking cell wall, lacking chlorophyll
Zoology
study of animal life
Cell
the basic unit of life, structure and function in living things
Tissue
a group of specialized cells that preform the same function
Organ
a group of tissues that work together to carry out a set of functions
Organ System
a group of organs that work together to carry out major body functions
what is Bilateral Symmetry? what are the Advantages?
body can be divided into equal parts (in half), makes rapid movements possible
ex: fish, humans, birds
where is Dorsal, Posterior, Ventral, Anterior?
D- back
P- butt
V- belly
A- head
what is Cephalization?
the concentration of sensory organs and nervous tissue at the head end (anterior) of the body
ex: has brain, eyes, ears, nose
what is Noncephalized?
nervous system devised as a nerve net, with no head
ex: coral, jelly fish, sea stars
Exoskeleton?
external skeleton, supports and protects an animals body
ex: crabs, grasshoppers
Endoskeleton
internal support structure, present in chordates
ex: fish, bears, dogs, humans
Invertebrate?
animals with NO backbone
ex: octopus, jellyfish, worm
Vertebrate?
animal WITH backbone or a notochord
ex: snake, frog, humans, cats
