Intro to anatomy 1 Flashcards
What is the anatomical position?
- standing erect
- facing forward
- palms facing forward
Why should palms face forward in the anatomical position?
To keep the bones in the forearm (ulna and radius) parallel and prevent them
What is the anterior side in anatomical locations?
Front
What is the posterior side in the anatomical position?
Back side
What is the ventral side?
front (used for surfaces)
What is the dorsal side?
back (for surfaces)
What is the superior area in anatomical location?
Top half of the body
What is the inferior area in anatomical location?
bottom half of the body
What is the superficial area?
on the surface of the body
what is the deep area?
away from body surface
what is the midline of the body called?
medial plane
what is the lateral area?
far from midline
what is the proximal area?
near torso/origin
what is the distal area?
far from origin/torso
what is the median plane?
vertical plane passing from front to back through midline
what is the sagittal plane?
any plane parallel to the median plane
what is the coronal plane?
vertical plane from side to side perpendicular to sagittal and median plane
what is the horizontal/transverse plane?
plane at right angle to coronal and sagittal plane (looking from feet upwards)
how are bones classified?
- long
- short
- flat
- irregular
how is the skeleton classified?
axial vs appendicular
which bones are in the axial skeleton?
bones in the head, neck and chest
which bones are in the appendicular skeleton?
all other bones and bones attached to the axial
what are the two ways to classify joints?
by their structure or function
what are the different structures of joints?
- fibrous (immovable)
- cartilaginous (limited mobility)
- synovial (freely movable)
What are the different types of movements at joints?
- flexion vs. extension
- induction vs. adduction
- rotation
- circumduction
