INTRO

A

Pathology is the study of nature of disease, disease process and the structural and functional changes this disease causes to organs and tissues

Pathogenesis is the mechanism by which the lesions are produced (lesions which are characteristic changes in tissues and cells due to the presence of a disease in an individual or animal) and the sequence and pattern of cellular injury which leads to the disease.

Morphology includes the gross changes and the microscopic changes

Signs are elicited by physician while Symptoms are felt by the patient

Gross Examination:
Determining what you’re looking at
Determining what’s wrong
(Useful features; Size Shape Consistency and Colour)

Gold standard for light microscopy is (H&E stain) Hematoxylin and Eosin.
Hematoxylin stains blue to purple: Nuclei, Nucleoli, Bacteria, Calcium
Eosin stains Pink to red: Collagen, Cytoplasm, RBC, Fibrin

Special Histochemical stains: Prussian Blue, Congo Red, Ziek Neelson
ImmunoHistochemical stains: Cytokeratin, Desmin, Vimentin

USES OF IHC
-Tumors of unknown Histogenesis
-Prognostic markers in Cancer
-Prediction of response to therapy
-Infections
