Intro/Terminology Flashcards
What are the three kinds of symbiosis?
Parasitism: one benefits, one harmed
Commensalism: one benefits, one doesn’t care
Mutualism: both benefits
What is the equation for control?
C = M + E + T C: control M: management E: epidemiology T: treatment
What is a paratenic host and what happens to the parasite in this host?
The parasite acts as a passenger in the paratenic host.
NO development occurs
Why is the definitive host important?
The definitive host is required for the parasite to undergo sexual reproduction
What happens to the parasite in an intermediate host?
They may have development, but there is no sexual reproduction in the intermediate host.
What kind of parasite is totally dependent on the host? Provide an example
An obligate parasite
Eg. fleas
Define facultative parasitism and provide an example.
A parasite which can multiply without a host but under some circumstances can become parasitic.
Eg. blowflies whose maggots normally develop in decaying matter can also develop in wounds of animals
Define permanent parasitisim.
A parasite which is on the host at all times.
Eg. lice
Define intermittent parasitism
A parasite which visits the host periodically.
Eg. mosquito
