Intro/skin Flashcards
Axial Skeleton
- Bones around midline of body
- 12 pairs of ribs (7 true, 5 false)
- 33 vertebra
- Skull
Appendicular Skeleton
-Limb girdles and everything that extends from them
Functions of the skin
- Protection
- Sensation
Muscle
neurovascular compartments within fascia that contains nerves, arteries, and veins
Bony Coverings
- Muscle
- Superficial
- Dermis and Epidermis
Epidermis
- Cornified layer (outer)
- Stratified Squamous Epithelium (inner)
Cornified Layer
-composed of sheets of dead cells hardened by keratin that protects and eventually wears off
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
- Living cells that will eventually be in outer layer
- Nerve endings penetrate this layer
- Has pegs that just into the dermis (bumps are the bottom of this layer)
Dermis
- Papillary (Upper Layer)
- Reticular Layer (inner Area)
Papillary layer
- Less fibrous
- has bumps called dermal papilla
Reticular Layer
- Lot of fibrous connective tissue that adds strength to dermis
- Rich in nerve endings, blood vessels, and hair follicles with pass into epidermis
Superficial Fascia/hypodermis/telesubcutaneous
- Abundant in loose fibrous connective tissue, fat, nerves. blood vessels
- Major fat deposit of body (very thick)
- Superficial fascia covers deep fascia
Fascia
- Separate muscles from skin
- Rich in connective tissue
Retinaculae Cutis
Tightly connected connective tissue in place where the superficial fascia is bound to the underlying structure
-(Creases in palm of the hand)
Deep Fascia
-very thin layer that surrounds and encases the muscle below the superficial fascia
