Q

Integumentary System

A

The largest system that forms a physical barrier from the outside world.
Includes the epidermis, dermis, hypodermis, associated glands, hair, and nails.
- protection
- Sensation
- Thermoregulation
- Vitamin D synthesis

Q

Organ

A

Aggregate of tissues performing a specific function

17
Q

Tissue

A

Group of cells performing a specific function

4 Types of tissue

18
Q

Epithelium Tissue

A

General Function: Covering, lining, barrier

  • always in contact with free space
  • Cells lie on top of a basement membrane
  • Does not have a blood supply
  • all nutrients must pass through the basement membrane, if the cells break contact with the basement membrane, they will die.
  • Epithelium acts as a barrier keeping the outside out and inside in
  • Classified by depth (simple and stratified) and shape (squamous, cuboidal, columnar)
  • Rule Breakers: Pseudostratified and transitional
19
Q

Simple Epithelium

A

Only one layer

20
Q

Stratified Epithelium

A

More than one layer

21
Q

Squamous Epithelium

A

Flat cells

22
Q

Cuboidal Epithelium

A

Cube-like cells

23
Q

Columnar Epithelium

A

Tall cells

24
Q

Connective tissue

A
General Function: connective, support, padding
Components:
1) Ground Substance
2) Protein Fibers
3) Cells
25
Q

Ground Substances

A

Connective Tissue

the matrix that holds it all together, like jello

26
Q

Protein Fibers

A

Connective Tissue
Collagen: provides tensile strength
Elastin: provides elasticity

27
Q

Cells: Fibroblast

A

Connective Tissue

Makes the proteins

28
Q

Muscle Tissue

A

General Function: Movement

Three Types: Smooth, Skeletal, Cardiac

29
Q

Smooth muscle tissue

A

forms internal organs

30
Q

Skeletal muscle tissue

A

the muscle that moves your skeleton

31
Q

Cardiac Muscle Tissue

A

Your heart’s muscle

32
Q

Nervous Tissue

A

General Function: communication and control

33
Q

Cell

A

Basic structural and functional component
