What does phonetics study?
It studies speech sounds (Phones).
What are the different areas of phonetics?
There is articulatory (how speech sounds are produced), acoustic (physics of speech sounds) amd auditory (how sounds are perceived).
What is the system in which each letter indicates one unique sound?
The IPA.
What does IPA stand for?
International Phonetic Association but mostly for International Phonetic Alphabet.
Why do we need the IPA?
To be able to transcribe the speech sounds of any human language.
To record speech sounds accurately.
Why can’t we just use (English) spelling to study speech sounds?
English spelling is very inconsistent (Same letter / Different sounds, same sound / Different letters, etc.)
What is NAPA?
It stands for North American Phonetic Alphabet.
In what field in particular iis the IPA used?
In linguistic research as well as in foreign language teaching.
