A system of ideas that inform economic, political and social theory
Universalism
The perspective that there is a singular set of rights or path to development that should apply to all human beings
Relativism
Values and beliefs must be relative to the standards inherent to said culture
Mainstream Development Paradigm
The use of western standards of progress and western processes of development. Emphasis on market economies, development measured through an economic lens
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
A measure of the total goods and services in a country
Gross National Product (GNP)
Total production of goods and services by all citizens of a country, regardless of where they reside
Gross National Income (GNI)
A variation of GNP which removes indirect taxes, used by world bank
Gini Coefficient
Measures income distribution in a country
Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)
Measures GDP with buying power of differing currencies
Human Development Index (HDI)
measure of development based on life expectancy, literacy, and earned income
Gender Development Index (GDI)
Measures HDI with intent to capture inequalities between men and women
Gross National Happiness
measure of development based on community vitality, culture, health, etc.
