What is voice production composed of?
- Air: Lungs, diaphragm, muscles of chest.
Respiration is the energy source for voice - Vibration: Larynx, vocal folds
3.Resonance: oral and nasal cavity
What do we perceive as normal voice?
- Loudness - voice is loud enough to be heard
- Pleasantness - voice is pleasant to the ear
- Flexibility - Flexible enough to express emotion
- Representation - represents persons age and gender
- Production hygiene - voice produced without causing vocal trauma/ laryngeal lesions
What is the function of voice?
Audibility, paralinguistic features such as emotion and personality, linguistic features such as grammar, social interaction, exert control over listener. listener can inference things about speaker.
Features of normal voice
Phonation: Males - 25sec, females - 20sec, child - 10 sec, over 65 - 14 sec
Quality - should be plesant (not rough, breathy, strained etc)
Pitch - 5 notes minimum, smooth equal change between each note, distinct difference between high and low
Volume - count 1- 5 with increasing volume, even progession with distinct difference
Voice team
GP, ENT, SLP, radiologist, singing/speech and drama teacher, pyschiatrist/psychologist
What is the role of the speech pathologist?
- Diagnose & treat vocal behaviour
- Select & implement voice therapy program
- Develop therapeutic
relationship with P (goals, documentation, termination criteria) - Technological assistance
- Provide info ie. re vocal hygiene
- Develop P’s self-perception skills
- Analysis of lifestyle & environmental factors impacting on voice
- Establish strategies to reduce vocal abuse
- Appropriate and sensitive referrals
What is the number one rule for voice referrals?
Client must be seen by an ENT first!
