Intro Flashcards
Define Lab Animal Science
The scientific and technical information and techniques that apply to lab animal care
What is included in lab animal science?
1) Husbandry
2) Nutrition
3) Behavioral
4) Health
5) Production and Management
Define AALAS
Animal Association for Lab Animal Science
What is AALAS for?
Serves as the principle means of communication between individuals and organizations within the field of lab animal science.
What government associations are included in lab animal science?
1) AALAS - Animal Association for Lab Animal Science
2) AAALAC - Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Lab Animal Care
3) NABR - National Association for Biomedical Research
4) AVMA - American Veterinary Medical Association
5) ACLAM - American College of Lab Animal Medicine
6) NIH - National Institute of Health
7) PHS - Public Health Services
8) USDA - United States Department of Agriculture
Define ALAT and what do they do?
Assistant Lab Animal Tech
Animal husbandry duties, sanitize, monitor environmental conditions and maintain records
Define LAT and what do they do?
Lab Animal Technician
Have more skills and responsibilities than ALAT (including research)
Define LATG and what do they do?
Lab Animal Technologist
Supervise and are involved in research
What are the 3 R’s?
1) Replacement
2) Refinement
3) Reduction
Define replacement
Replacement of animals by cell or tissue culture or by mathematical models where possible
Define refinement
Refinement of procedures to minimize stress or pain to animals when possible
Define Reduction
Reduction to the minimum number of animals that will serve a useful purpose, yield statistically sound data and produce scientific benefit
Define duties Principle Investigator
Responsible person with ideas and protocols, responsible for funding
Define duties of Co-investigator and Research Technicians
Perform the research required, analyze and collect data required.
Define duties of LAT (ALAT and LATG’s) on research team
Carry out animal care functions critical to the maintenance of healthy animals
Define the duties of the Lab Animal Veterinarian
Coordinates animal care activities and advises investigators on proper animal model selection and use
Define duties of the animal suppliers
Provide animals that meet the specific research requirements
Define IACUC
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
What is IACUC for?
To make sure people are compliant with federal and institutional policies/regulations such as the animal welfare act and PHS policies
How often are facility inspections done by IACUC?
At least bi-annually
What is the animal welfare act?
Regulates the use of ALL warm-blooded vertebrates in research except birds, rats and mice bred exclusively for research and farm animals used or intended for use ad food or fiber. Also excludes farm animal intended for use in studies to improve animal nutrition, breeding, management or production efficiency
