What is a constitution?
A constitution is a body of fundamental principles or established precedents according which a state or other organisation is acknowledged to be governed.
Different constitutions
Some constitutions are written in a single document, such as the US, Canada and France; and others are unwritten instead formed from a collection of legal and non legal sources, such as those in the UK, Israel and New Zealand
Who identified the four basic roles of a constitution?
Professor Feldman
What were Professor Feldman’s four basic roles of a constitution?
1 - it establishes the institutions and grants them and their members the power to carry out their missions
2 - it puts checks and balances in place to limit the abuse of power
3 - it provides legitimacy for the use of power
4 - it provides a certain degree of flexibility to allow the state to evolve overtime
