What are eating disorders?
Serious psychiatric illnesses associated with health problems.
How does disordered eating occur?
Can start with increased energy expenditure without an increased calorie intake to supplement it.
Or a decreased calorie intake in order to lose weight.
It is common in sports that involve need to lose weight - e.g. rowing. Ref to support this?
Terry and Waite (1996):
Study of 124 rowers found that 19.4% had eating disorders, 12.9% had abnormal eating patterns and 12.9% used vomiting for weight control.
Main areas of disordered eating?
Anorexia nervosa - when someone has a lack of appetite characterised by desire to lose weight by refusing to eat. Often perceive things to be fine. Can cause amenorrhoea.
Bulimia - binge eating, where large amounts of calories are ingested in a small window, followed by purging.
