Intro Flashcards
What are the four connective tissues?
- Fibres
- Matrix
- Cellular
- Adipose (fat)
What are the three types of fibres?
- Collagenous
- Elastic
- Reticular
What is loose connective tissue?
- Mostly collagenous
- Loosely arranged
What is an osteocyte?
- Mature bone cell
- Lays down new bone
What is an osteoclast?
- Eats old cells
What is an osteoblast?
- Immature bone cell
What are the two types of bone cells?
- Fixed cells
- Wandering cells
What is cartilage?
- Dense network of fibres
What does avascular mean?
- Means no blood vessels
How do bones and cartilage get their nutrients?
Through diffusion.
How does cartilage become bone?
- Interstial (growth from within)
- Appositional (growth from the outside)
Give an example of elastic cartilage?
Upper ear
Give an example of fibrocartilage?
Between vertebral discs
What is lacunae?
Spaces where osteocytes pack in.
What is caniliculi?
Channels in which osteocytes communicate with one another.
What is periostium?
Fibrous covering on the outside of bone.
What is endostium?
Fibrous covering on the inside.
What is the diaphysis of a bone?
The shaft portion of the bone.
What is the epiphysis of a bone?
The ends of the bone (distal/proximal)
What is the metaphysics of the bone?
The cartilage (for a portion of time) that joins the diaphysis and the metaphysics.
What is osteogenisis (ossification)?
Process in which bone tissue is found
What are the two processes in which osteogenisis occurs?
- Intramembrenous
2. Endrochondral
How many bones in an adult human skeleton?
206
