Intro Flashcards
Mechanical response
- result of pressure, force or range of motion on tissues
- increase blood circulation, reduced swelling + reduced formation of scar tissue
Reflective response
- Nerves are stimulated activates a relfexive arc
- decreased sympathetic nervous system (general relaxation)
- trigger stretch receptors ( muscle spindles)
- increased diameter of blood vessels ( reduced blood pressure)
Lymphatic system
- promotes Lymph circulation (depends on pressure from massage)
- Reduced lymphodema (swelling)
- Increases lymphocyte count (WBC’s)
Thrombophlebitis
A condition that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins often in the legs
Cortisol
Steroid hormone
Produced by 2 adrenal glands which sit in top of each kidney
Effects on digestive system
-promoted evacuation of the colon
-Releases constipation
-Can help colic (if not to painful) + intestinal gas
-Stimulates digestion
Scope of practice (client assessment)
- history(discuss with owner, etc)
- Palpation(physical examination)
- Determines treatment goals, contraindications, other heath care needs
- Doesn’t include diagnosis of illness/injury
Colic
A symptom of abdominal (belly) pain, which in horses is usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal track
Hyperemia
Increased blood flow at the surface
Atrophy
The partial or complete wasting away of a body part or tissue
Do nots for massage / contraindications
-contagious viral or bacterial pathologies
-Cancer
-Open wounds
-Thrombophlebitis
-Ringworm
-Respiratory distress
- Severe colic
-Swelling in the area near the heart
Contraindications
DO NOTS
Misc affects
-increases urine output
-Reduces fatigue and Increase vigor
-Improved mood
-Promotes communication and expression
-Increase physical well being
-Reduces touch adversions and touch sensitivity
-Increases mental alertness
-Satisfys emotional needs
Parasympathetic
The part of the nervous system that slows the heart, dilates blood vessels, decreased pupil size, increases digestive juices, relaxes muscles in gastrointestinal tract
Gastrointestinal
Includes mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, composed of the Caecum, large colon, small colon, rectum
