Intro Flashcards
Define Command
The authority vested in an individual for control of military forces
Define Authority
The legitimate power which one person or gorup possessses and practices over another.
Define Control
Exercise of authority IOT implement orders or directives. Control provides a means of exercising effective command.
Define Command and Control
The exercise of authority and direction in the accomplishment of a mission.
What are the objectives of a C2 system?
Understand the battlespace
Select a course of action
Issue Intent and orders
Monitor the execution of operations
Evaluate results
Reproduce the OODA Loop
What is the goal of Observation in OODA?
Gather valuable information
What does Orient mean in OODA?
Contextualizes the information to understand the battle space.
Define “Friction” as termed by Clausewitz
The impacts of uncertainty and time
What are the levels of warfare (3)
Strategic
Operational
Tactical
What are the criteria for information quality?
Precision
Relevance
Accuracy
Timeliness
Usability
Completeness
What the 3 maxims of information quality?
Incomplete or imprecise info is better than no info
Untimely or unsuable info is the same as no info
Irrelevant or innacurate infor is worse than no info
Describe Detailed Control
Centralized command and control with explicit orders.
Verticle flow of information.
Takes time.
Describe Mission Control
Decentralized and flexible
Horizontal flow of information
Based on commanders intent
What are the basic functions of C2 support systems?
Collecting
Processing
Disseminating
Protecting
What are six desirable characteristics of a C2 system?
Reliability
Security
Timeliness
Flexibility
Interoperability
Survivability
C2 heiracrchy labeling
What are three types of data?
Inorganic
Organic
Intelligence
What is inorganic data?
Shared from another platform
Eg. Link, Sonobuoy, Helo
What is Organic data?
Data gathered by own sensors
What is intelligence data and what is the difference from Inorganic data?
Pre-cognition, telling us what is going to happen rather than what is currently happening.
What is Real Time Processing?
Information is updated so fast it is essentially real time.
Processing requirements have consequences if they are not met.
It is a spectrum between real and non real time processing.
What is Data Correlation?
A measure of the association between two variables.
Used to determine if two systems are detecting the same contact, then selecting the best sensor.
AKA Local Fusion
What is Data Fusion?
Combines the best sensor inputs from multiple sensors to create a sinlge output with less uncertainty in the overall track.
How does CMS assign trackers during Local Fusion (Data Correlation)?
Assigning best sensor.
CEROS is the best sensor.
What is an example of Reliability in CMS?
Redundant cabinets
Raid 5
Redundant Servers
What is an example of Survivability in CMS?
Physical protection by cabinets (shock mounted, dust proof, temperature controlled)
What is an example of Security with CMS?
User roles
Security clearance for access to spaces
What is an example of Timeliness with CMS?
Real Time Processing
What is an example of Flexibility with CMS?
Modes of Operation
COTS Components
What is an example of Interoperability with CMS?
Link, Isolated Network Display, I/O Processors
