Intro Flashcards
What is anatomy?
The study of the body’s structures
What is physiology?
The study of the body’s function.
What are the levels of structural organization within the body?
- Chemical
- Cellular
- Tissue
- Organ system
- Organism
What are the four basic types of tissue?
- Muscular tissue
- Nervous tissue
- Connective tissue
- Epithelial tissue
What are the basic life processes of the body?
- Metabolism
- Responsiveness
- Movement
- Growth
- Differentiation
- Reproduction
What is homeostasis?
The internal balance of the body.
What is the fluid found inside cells?
Intercellular fluid (ICF)
What is the fluid found out side of body cells?
Extra cellular fluid (ECF)
What is the fluid that fills between the cells of tissue?
Interstitial fluid
What are the three basic components of a feedback system?
- The Receptor
- Control Center
- Effector
How does the body maintain control of homeostasis?
Nerve impulses ( The Brain)
Hormones (Endocrinology System)
What are the two types of feedback systems?
Negative
Positive
What is are some examples of an controlled condition?
Body temperature
Blood pressure
Glucose
What is a receptor?
Body structure that monitor monitors changes in a controlled condition and sends input to the response system
What is a negative feedback system?
A feedback system that reverses a change in a controlled condition.
* e.g blood pressure regulation
What is a positive feedback system?
Strengthens or reinforces change, and one of the body’s controlled conditions.
* e.g. Labor contractions, blood clots
What is Superior?
Towards the head, or the upper part of a structure
What is inferior?
Away from the head, or the lower part of the structure.
What is anterior?
Nearer or at the front of the body
What is posterior?
Nearer, or to at back of the body.
What is medial?
Nearer to the midline
What is Ipsilateral?
On the same side of the body as another structure.
What is contralateral?
On the opposite side of the body from another structure.
What is proximal?
Nearer to the attachment of a limb to a trunk
What is distal?
Farther from the attachment of the limb to the trunk.
What is a sagittal plane?
A vertical plane that divides the body or organ into left and right sides.
A plane that divides the body into equal left and right sides is known as what?
The median plane/midsagittal plane
What plane divides the body into front and back portions?
Frontal or Coronal Plane
What plane divides the body, or an organ into superior and inferior portions?
Transverse plane also known as a
Cross sectional plane or horizontal plane
What are body cavities?
Space that encloses internal organs.
What is the yellow plane?
Frontal/Coronal plane
What is the pink plane?
The Median plane
What is the blue plane?
Sagittal plane
