   - releases hormones to cause secretion or production of other hormones such as LH, FSH
   - indirect acting hormones
2. posterior lobe
   - the two hormones produced are vasopressin and oxytocin
   - direct acting hormones

the endocrine system is also controlled by the feedback mechanism
1. negative feedback: high hormone plasma levels

2. positive feedback: low hormone plasma levels
