Titles of statue
All modern statues have a long and short title both of which give some indication as to the contents and objective of the statue.
Preamble
Older statue usually have an introductory paragraph following the title. This paragraph outlines parliament’s purpose.
Marginal notes
Offer guidelines added by a draftman after it has been passed by Parliament.
Marginal notes are not written by parliament so they shouldn’t be regarded as parliament’s intention.
Interpretation section
Some act have an interpretation section to explain the meaning of key words.
s.4(1) of the Theft Act 1968 explains the meaning of property.
Other section of the Act
Other section of the act may be helpful when interpreting a statue.
