Intravenous injection Flashcards
What does ivc stand for
Intravenous cannula (the vein)
What are the 3 ways you can administer medication through an ivc?
A continous infusion
An IV bolus (push)
A intermittent infusion
What assessment should a nurse do
An IVC assessment
How do you label the IVC and how long can it stay in
Date and 3 days or 72 hrs
What should you do before administering the medication?
Flush with saline
When should you flush with saline with a bolus
Before pushing the medication and
After pushing the medication
Why do you have to flush a IV bolus?
To ensure the medication is pushed into the vein and does not sit in the line
Why would you reconstitute a medication?
Because the medication is in a powder form, you add water
How does an IVC fluids affect blood volume?
It increases the volume of fluid in the bloodstream.
Benefits of fluid for blood volume
-Adds volume of the amount of fluid circulating in the bloodstream
How does an IVC fluids affect blood pressure
With more fluid circulating in the bloodstream, the heart pumps a greater volume of blood with each beat, resulting in increased cardiac output. This increased cardiac output contributes to higher blood pressure.
Vasoconstriction is…
The muscles tightening your blood vessels to shrink the space inside, results in higher pressure
Vasodilation is…
The muscles opening your blood vessels to make the space inside bigger. pressure is lower
Formula to administer IV fluids over hours
Total volume (mL) ÷ Time in hours
Formula to administer IV fluids over 30 mins
Total volume (mL) x 60
÷ Time in minutes
