What are the stages of Labour?
First Stage
* Interval between onset of labour and full cervical dilatation
Second Stage – Pushing phase
* From full cervical dilatation to delivery of infant
Third Stage – Placenta Birth
* From delivery of infant to expulsion of the placenta
Why is relaxation in labour important?
o Reduces stress
Through increasing natural oxytocin. Using rhythmical breathing
o Reduces tense muscles
o Decreased risk of c-section
Important in breaking the Pain, fear and tension cycle
What does Pain or Fear look like during labour?
Breath holding
Facial expression
Tense shoulders/ arms/ fingers/ face
Vocalisation
Lack of support (birth partner)
Increased pain/fear – Increased perception of pain and reactions
How to break the
Strong senation isn’t always bad
Positive/empowerting midwife
Rapport with O&G
Know your body and pain levels
Music / lights / massage/ birth partner / birth plan / TENS / water / positioning.
