intrapartum Flashcards
period during labor and delivery starting before labor admission through to the immediate postpartum period
intrapartum period
care of women and their babies, during labor and immediately after birth
intrapartum care
physiologic and mechanical series of processes where all products of conception are expelled from the birth canal
labor/parturition
actual event of birth
delivery
4 components of labor (4Ps)
passenger, passage, power, psychology
the passengers
fetus, membranes, and placenta
largest part of the body; most frequent presenting part; least compressible of all parts
fetal head
cranial bones of the fetal head
2 frontal, 2 parietal, 2 temporal, 1 occipital
thin spaces in between bones; aid in molding of fetal skull
sutures
anterior suture between 2 frontal bones
frontal sutures
anterior suture between frontal and parietal bones
coronal suture
longitudinal, midline suture joining 2 parietal bones
sagittal suture
posterior suture between parietal and occipital bones
lambdoid suture
points of intersection of cranial bones; membranes-filled spaces between cranial bones; referred to as “soft spot”
fontanels
formed by 2 frontal bones and 2 parietal bones; lies at the junction of sagittal, coronal and frontal sutures; diamond-shaped; closes when infant is 12 to 18 months old
anterior fontanelle (B regma)
formed by union of 2 parietal and 1 occipital bones; triangular shaped; closes in infant 6 to 8 weeks or 2-3 months old
posterior fontanelle (lambda)
Slight overlapping of the cranial bones due to the force of uterine contractions pressing the
head against the cervix; Skull becomes elongated shape; permits passage to the maternal pelvis
molding
: area behind the posterior fontanel
occiput
lies between the 2 fontanels and extends to the parietal bones
vertex
Located in front of the anterior fontanel
sinciput
diameters of the fetal skull
anteroposterior diameter
