intra op Flashcards
what is intra op?
during surgery
for safety, what is it called when everything stops immediately before surgery to prevent mistakes?
TIME OUT
what is the goal of a surgical environment?
to prevent infection
what is considered unsterile?
wet surfaces, when in doubt its unsterile
to prevent injury to the pt what should the nurse do?
every couple hours reposition the pt to relieve pressure, so skin breakdown doesn’t occur
when anesthesia covers the entire body its called?
GENERAL
when anesthesia treats only the location of the pain its called?
localized
when anesthesia covers the affected limbs
epidural/ nerve block
as a nurse when would you turn the head of a pt and suction as needed
when the pt feels nausea and vomiting
as a nurse why would you check peripheral perfusion and pulse oximetry?
hypoxia can occur, due to endotracheal tube not deep enough or wrong size
what is the most severe form of an allergic reaction?
anaphylactic
what med would you use for a pt have a anaphylactic reaction?
epinephrine
a pt is having swelling of the conjunctiva, runny nose, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, Low BP, shortness of breath, stridor, what can be wrong with this pt?
s/s of anaphylaxis
what condition can be triggered by some types of general anesthetic agent, and is a rare hereditary muscular disease?
malignant hyperthermia
pt is having muscle rigidity, tachycardia, tachypnea, hypertension, dysrhythmia, cyanosis after receiving general anesthesia what can this be s/s of?
malignant hyperthermia
how do we treat malignant hyperthermia?
the surgery is stopped
anesthesia is discontinued
oxygen is given 100% because of the pt increased RR and HR
foley catheter to monitor intake and output
Dantolene sodium (will relieve the muscle spasm)
dantrolene is used for what?
used to treat malignant hyperthermia, can also be use to treat muscle spasticity associated with spinal cord injuries, stroke, CP. and MS
adverse reactions of dantrolene?
drowsiness, muscle weakness, hepatoxicity, diarrhea, flushing, anaphylaxis
as a nurse what would you assess after administering dantrolene
assess for bowel function and BS periodically
assess previous anesthesia history of all surgical pt
assess for family hx of reactions to anesthesia
monitor ECG, VS, electrolytes, and urine output
monitor LFT test
when a nurse administers dantrolene IV what should the nurse assess for
medication is very irritating to tissues, observe infusion site frequently to avoid extravasation
