Intestinal pathology Flashcards
1
Q
How does necrosis occur in e.g. intestinal volvulus?
A
venous outflow obstructed first, srterial blood still entering, tissue becomes congested, arterial cut off too, nerosis and rupture
2
Q
What part of the intestines is usually affected by intussusception?
A
distal ileum
3
Q
How does obstruction of the upper intestinal tract lead to uraemia?
A
vomiting –> dehydration and metabolic alkalosis –> decreased renal perfusion and uraemia
4
Q
with lower gi obstructions do you expect a metabolic acidosis or alkalosis?
A
acidosis - dehydration & catabolism of fat and muscle (keto acidosis)
5
Q
what are th 5 mechanisms of diarrhoea?
A
altered epithelial cell transport e.g. e coli altered structure/permeability osmotic altered motility damage to colonic mucosa
6
Q
why are parvoviruses more severe than e.g. rotaviruses
A
attack the crypts
