Often used in therapy so feelings can be easily expressed

Researcher has some predetermined questions that they ask in all interviews but they can deviate from the questions and explore the answers in detail
Usually used in clinical to make a diagnosis

What are the weaknesses of an interview?

A
  • risk of researcher bias which can wrongly influence ppts answers
  • difficult to maintain objectivity and subjectivity during analysis of results and when finding themes
  • can be difficult to replicate unstructured and semi-structured interviews as different questions are asked to each interviewee. Therefore like reliability
  • issues with social desirability bias in face to face interviewing as the interviewee may not be honest with fear of being judged
