Explain what a structured interview is
Predetermined questions with mixed responses they do not deviate from
Same wording in each
Large scale interview based studies
Explain what an unstructured interview is
Researcher has certain topics they want to explore with no predetermined questions
Often used in therapy so feelings can be easily expressed
Explain what happens in a semi-structured interview
Researcher has some predetermined questions that they ask in all interviews but they can deviate from the questions and explore the answers in detail
Usually used in clinical to make a diagnosis
What are the 6 steps in an interview process
- establish a rapport
- describe the project
- obtain informed consent
- conduct the interview
- ending the interview
- take notes and transcribe
What kind of data is collected in an interview?
Qualitative

What are the strengths of an interview?
- can explain and explore in more detail by asking further questions and so is less limiting than a questionnaire
- data is more likely to reflect accurate opinions of the interviewee so can be used in case study’s
What are the weaknesses of an interview?
- risk of researcher bias which can wrongly influence ppts answers
- difficult to maintain objectivity and subjectivity during analysis of results and when finding themes
- can be difficult to replicate unstructured and semi-structured interviews as different questions are asked to each interviewee. Therefore like reliability
- issues with social desirability bias in face to face interviewing as the interviewee may not be honest with fear of being judged
