advantages:
1. might make interviewees more confident/ OR less confident
2. Allows you to explore a group dynamic

disadvanatges:
1. often one person dominates group interviews- response accounts for loudspeakers- not everyone

e.g. willis 12 lads study

  1. Rapport/sensitivity can be built up
  2. No set questions-> i-ee is free to discuss different ideas, more flexible

A
  1. Practical issues- time and sample size limits what can be studied
  2. Small numbers- less rep, harder to make valid generalisations
  3. Reliability- each is unique, hard to comapre with others, cannot be replicated

  1. Training interviewers= straightforward, inexpensive
  2. Results can be easily quantified-> can easily compare people’s studies

Give 3 disadvantages to structured interviews

A
  1. Closed- ended questions-> restrict interviewees, might not fit what they want to say
  2. social interaction-> risk that interviewer will influence interviewee’s answers by asking a ‘leading question’
  3. Feminist criticisms- Graham- survey methods, patriarchal, invalid picture of women’s experiences
