What interests you about working at our summer camp?

A

I really enjoy spending time around children because I am young at heart and I believe I can understand and help them. By being able to support them it will also help me improve my English so that I can find more opportunities in the future.

Q

Describe your previous experience working with children or in a camp setting.

A

I have been a nanny for several children before. I often help out at my church with the children and at camp during the summer. Currently however, I work at a Kindergarten through 11th grade school, and though my job is mainly in the audio visual department I often interact with students and watch how the teachers interact with them as well.

Q

How would you handle a conflict between campers?

A

I am a great mediator, so I would isolate the children involved and foster an environment of peace and understanding to give the children the space to explain their issues and work out their differences in a controlled environment. I think it’s important to let children express themselves as long as they dont harm themselves or others, as peace is always the best resolution.

Creo que es importante dejar que los niños se expresen siempre y cuando no se hagan daño a sí mismos ni a los demás, ya que la paz es siempre la mejor solución.

How do you prioritize tasks when you have multiple responsibilities?

A

When I have multiple responsibilities I like to handle the tasks that require my immediate attention first. Then I move on to the less urgent tasks that can be taken care of throughout the day.

Q

Can you give an example of a time you worked as part of a team?

A

I once wanted to clean a park because it was full of litter, so I got together with some of my friends and they helped me to clean it. Looking back, I couldn’t have finished cleaning the park that same day alone and I had a great time working together with my friends. It felt good to utilize my team working skills to beautify that park.

Q

What strategies would you use to engage campers in activities?

A

I would engage them by being a high energy person. Children tend to respond well in environments that allow them to be high energy as well. I would try to describe activities as if they were games, that way the children feel as though they are playing even when they are learning. One way to do that is by promoting group work. Toward the end of the day I would look for ways to keep the group motivated.

Q

How would you respond to an emergency situation at camp?

A

First, I would evaluate the severity of the situation to see what type of attention the person requires, then if necessary, I would administer first aid myself, however, I would call someone with more first aid experience if I can’t handle it alone. If necessary I would call the emergency services and keep track of all details in order to write an incident report and notify the parents of the child.

Q

What are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to working in a camp environment?

A

My strengths that will serve me the most in a camp setting are that I am a good leader, I know how to listen to others, I am a helpful and very organized person, I learn things pretty quickly and I am honest and kind. My weakness would be delegating tasks in a team setting because I like to be involved in all aspects and sometimes I forget it is more efficient to focus on one thing rather than trying to do a little bit of everything.
