Interview Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Who was your best boss and who was the worst?

A

My best boss was very receptive to our needs and concerns. He made it clear what was expected of us. He was also accessible, sociable, patient, and upbeat. I can’t think of any bad supervisors–I have gotten along with all of them and they all did a good job.

Q

What was the biggest accomplishment / failure in this position?

A

My biggest accomplishment was being considered one of my company’s top performers and a wealth of knowledge for my co-workers over the years. My biggest failure was probably being laid off although it was the whole department. Looking back, I could have left for other opportunities like many of my colleagues but I wanted to do the best I could to improve the situation there and remain loyal to the company.

Q

Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a co-worker who wasn’t doing his/her fair share of the work. What did you do and what was the outcome?

A

First, I asked him if there were any issues he was encountering that may inhibit his performance. He said there were none, but his productivity still did not improve. So, I discussed the problem with my data manager and we decided to track how long it actually took him to do a task and how many errors he made. Then I went over the errors with him and made sure that he was doing the task in the most efficient way. As a result, he was able to improve his productivity and accuracy over time.

Q

What have you been doing since your last job?

A

I have had the opportunity to spend more time with my family and relatives who live out of state. I have had to deal with some health issues that now I’ve recovered from and now I’m ready to contribute my talents and confident that I would be a great asset to your company. I have thought about my career path and want to stay in the clinical data management field and to that end, I have done some self-studies to brush up on my knowledge and skills. For about 6 months I had an online business. Lately, I have been doing volunteer work.

Q

Give some examples of teamwork.

A

On large studies, teamwork is important to clean the data. Sometimes, each member of the team is responsible for all aspects of data cleaning for a particular number of sites or subjects. In this case, teamwork is demonstrated when a member helps another with their assigned work if that person has fallen behind for some reason. At other times, each person on the study is assigned to perform a specific task throughout the study. In this case, teamwork is demonstrated when each member completes their work on time and thus the study overall is finished on time.

Q

What is your greatest weakness?/In what areas would you like to improve?

A

I like to make sure that my work is perfect, so I tend to spend a little too much time checking it. However, I have improved over the years and know that work needs to be performed accurately and within timelines and that sometimes perfection is not realistic even in this line of work. On the other hand, I have made my perfectionism work to my advantage in that I am fast enough to meet deadlines and with my attention to details, I know my work is of high quality.

Q

How do you handle stress and pressure?

A

I think stress to a certain extent is beneficial as it helps me stay motivated and productive. I enjoy working in a challenging environment. Furthermore, I try to react to the situation rather than the stress. That way, the situation is handled and doesn’t become too stressful. From a personal perspective, I manage stress with physical exercise. It’s a great stress reducer.

23
Q

Describe a time when your workload was heavy and how you handled it.

A

First, I let my manager and data manager know so that others, if available and qualified, could pitch in if necessary. Second, I made sure my tasks were prioritized so that I would not fall behind on the most pressing tasks. Third, I tried to find ways to streamline my efforts. Fourth, I worked extra hours as needed.

24
Q

How many hours do you normally work?

A

I work as much as necessary to get the job done. But I make sure that I am as efficient as possible so that I do not unnecessarily work too much overtime.

25
Q

How would you evaluate your ability to deal with conflict?

A

If things get very heated, I will step out of the situation emotionally and focus on solving the conflict. It’s best to try to settle the conflict on a 1 on 1 basis but if that’s not possible, I will take it to my manager. I always try to see things from other perspectives. I focus on the goal of settling the conflict and that it’s acceptable to all parties and efficiency can resume.

26
Q

How do you evaluate success?

A

I evaluate success by whether the goals that were set were accomplished whether it be personal goals that I set or team goals that are set by my supervisor, my data manager, or another team leader.

27
Q

What is your ideal position?

A

It would be one in which I enjoy the work I perform, like the people I work with and be able to contribute to the company in a meaningful way.

28
Q

Tell me about an important decision or judgment call you’ve had to make on the job.

A

On many occasions I would need to evaluate whether the time I spent on each study equaled the time allotted to it. If not, and I could not make any adjustments on my end, I would notify my data manager and supervisor so that they could adjust the time allotted if possible. Also, I took on a data manager role for a study that I was not previously involved with and which was closing in a few weeks. I addressed all the outstanding issues by drawing from my experience working on past studies and asking and receiving advice from data managers. As a result, the study successfully closed on time.

29
Q

Do you prefer to work independently or on a team?

A

I am equally comfortable working as a member of a team and independently. I’m aware that there are assignments that require a great deal of independent work and other assignments where team effort is most effective. So, I enjoy and work well in both situations.

30
Q

Describe a situation in which you had to deal with an irate customer. Did you rectify the problem?

A

I took on data manager responsibilities on a study that was closing soon. The sponsor data manager became angry because he was reviewing the final listings and thought that the error rate was too high. I calmly explained to him that according to the data management plan, the database was within the acceptable error rate. He still felt strongly about this and wanted to discuss with my manager. So, my manager and I met with him and we agreed to investigate any errors he found and thought unreasonable. It turned out that 99% of them were acceptable and did not reflect poorly on us as he assumed. During the entire time, I remained calm and did not take his criticism personally.

31
Q

When was the last time you were angry? What happened?

A

Anger to me means loss of control. I do not lose control. When I am stressed, I take a step back emotionally, take a deep breath, thoughtfully think through the situation, and then formulate a plan of action.

32
Q

Are you a team leader or a team follower?

A

I can be either depending on the situation. I have been a team leader on several of my studies training, delegating, and reviewing team members work. On the other hand, I can work well with the leader of a team too as I have an understanding of their position.

33
Q

What have you learned from your mistakes?

A

I’ve learned that although one needs to be very accurate in this line of work, that sometimes perfection is not realistic and that one needs to balance accuracy with timeliness.

34
Q

What did you like or dislike about your previous job?

A

I liked the challenge of meeting deadlines. I liked being able to work with data and being accurate and detailed with my work. I liked the teamwork required to accomplish goals. I liked the people who were great to work with.

35
Q

What do you find are the most difficult decisions to make?

A

I find the toughest decisions are the ones where the interests of the company conflict with the interests of the individual. It’s sometimes difficult to side with the company, but that is the decision that must be made in order to meet company goals. For instance, I had to change someone’s role on the team so that the goal would be more likely to succeed even though feelings may have been hurt.

36
Q

Which was most / least rewarding aspect of your last job?

A

The most rewarding aspect of my last job was knowing that I played an important part in the clinical trials process. The least rewarding was sometimes not getting the recognition for my efforts.

37
Q

How would you describe the pace at which you work?

A

I work at a steady pace and complete my work in advance of the deadline.

38
Q

What are you passionate about?

A

I’m passionate about making a difference. When I’m involved with a project at work I want to do my best to achieve success. I feel the same way about what I do in my personal life.

39
Q

What are your pet peeves?

A

I really don’t have a pet peeve. If something is bothering me, I tackle it by analyzing the reason and finding a solution so that it doesn’t remain bothersome.

40
Q

What problems have you encountered at work?

A

There are of course technical issues with the databases and software that come up once in awhile. Sometimes, the clinical sites would forget or be tardy in sending in resolved queries. Also, at times co-workers may not be performing tasks correctly or efficiently. I address these issues in a patient and positive manner.

41
Q

What were your responsibilities?

A

My responsibilities included reviewing edit checks and listings, generating and resolving queries, amending data in the database, performing SAE and vendor data reconciliation, running metrics and other reports, working with other departments and sponsors to resolve issues, quality control tasks, delegating work, training team members, attending meetings, testing databases as well as creating and amending study documents.

42
Q

What were your starting and final levels of compensation?

A

At Kendle, I started out at an annual salary of about 40K as a Clinical Data Associate and ended with a final salary of 68K as a Senior Clinical Data Associate.

43
Q

What are your salary expectations?

A

They are open depending on the position and the overall compensation package. I would like to know more about the responsibilities and challenges of the job before discussing the salary. However, a range between $55K and $65 would be reasonable.

44
Q

Are you a self motivator?

A

Yes, I give my all to a project and always look forward to successfully completing it and moving on to the next one at hand; it is very exciting for me. I am passionate about my work and truly enjoy excelling at my job.

45
Q

Do you take work home with you?

A

When I need to, there is no problem but it’s an exception rather than the rule. I realize the importance of meeting deadlines and getting work done on time. I am usually efficient enough to get all my work done within 40 hours unless there is an unexpected task to complete.

46
Q

Tell me about yourself.

A

I am easy to get along with. I am a goal-oriented person. I have high standards and am somewhat of a perfectionist. I pay attention to details and like to be sure that everything is just right and complete. I enjoy solving problems in a timely manner. I find working within study timelines to be challenging in a good way. I take satisfaction in helping to close a study and having an impact in bringing a study drug to market.

47
Q

Tell me about a tough work situation / project and how you solved it?

A

One such situation occurred when a site mailed us resolved queries. We did receive the package they sent us, but it did not contain all of the queries that they said should be present. Since we had problems with this site before, we suspected that they mistakenly thought they had put in all of the queries in the package. The site investigator disagreed and was very angry, so we had to be very tactful and inform him that we would revise our process of tracking queries received from the sites. So, I implemented a tracking tool going forward that matched the package number with the package contents so that we would know for certain what contents were in each package.

48
Q

What type of work environment do you prefer?

A

I liked the environment of my previous company. It was informal and friendly and we had a team mentality in that we were receptive to anyone who needed help or had a question. We were expected to do our job without anyone looking over our shoulder and we were held to high standards, however if we unexpectedly needed a day off or needed to work from home, it was okay.

49
Q

Describe a typical work week.

A

It depends on the stages and timelines of the studies, but I will usually receive requests and respond to them in order of importance. In addition, I will perform data cleaning through various means, delegate some of the tasks, and meet with the study team or sponsor to discuss the status of the study and any pressing issues.

50
Q

What Are Your Goals?

A

My goals include learning and growing with the company. Also, being one of the best workers in the company and eventually becoming part of the management team.

51
Q

What motivates you?

A

I’ve always been motivated by the desire to do a solid job at whatever position I’m in. I want to excel and be successful in my job, both for my own personal satisfaction and for my employer.

52
Q

If the people who know you were asked why you should be hired, what would they say?/What Are Three Positive Things Your Last Boss Would Say About You?

A

I’m sure if you asked my friends and supervisors that question, they would say that you should hire me because I have the skills outlined in your job description and I bring over 12 years of experience to this position. Words they have used to describe me are hard-working, trusted, knowledgeable, and willing to go the extra mile to get things done.

53
Q

Why are you interested in this role?

A

I am interested in this role because my experience, knowledge, skills, and interests match up well with the description of this position. Also, the company offers a type of environment in which I can flourish and grow.

54
Q

What are the names of the companies you worked for, your position and description, and your dates of employment?

A

For 10 years I worked for Kendle International, which is now INC Research. I started out there as a Clinical Data Associate in 2001 and was promoted to Clinical Data Associate II after 2 years, and was promoted again to Senior Clinical Data Associate 5 months later. Over the years, I have performed data management tasks with increasing complexity and responsibility. Prior to Kendle, I performed data management work at ICON and Parexel International.

55
Q

What was it like working for your supervisor?

A

It was great working with all of my supervisors. They were easy to get along with. If you wanted to talk about anything, they were very receptive. The Kendle office environment as a whole was friendly, relaxed, and conducive to productivity.

56
Q

Elevator Speech

A

Hi, my name is Mike Jelinek. I am currently between jobs and looking to continue my career in the field of clinical data management where I have over 12 years of experience. My last position was as a Senior Clinical Data Associate with a contract research organization assisting pharmaceutical companies in the drug development process. My position involved managing clinical data derived from clinical trials. Would you let me know of any open positions in the future for which I would be qualified? I would appreciate any help that you can give me in my job search. Thank you and have a great day!
