What do you know about Optum?
- Created in 2011 as the company’s health services business.
- Mostly technology focussed.
- Has three main businesses:
- OptumHealth
- OptumInsight
- OptumRx
- they focus on: data and analytics, pharmacy care services, population health, healthcare delivery and healthcare operations.
- goal of OptumRX is to improve the affordability of healthcare and prescription drugs.
Tell me about a time when you used initiative?
- Work
- Till not working
- Noticed that sandwiches were taking a particularly long time.
- Checked with kitchen, hadn’t received any orders.
- Went out, hand wrote all orders and sent them into the kitchen.
- Explained the situation to the customers, offering them a drink on the house.
- now with no college, instead of sitting at home all day waiting to go to work,
I look it upon myself to upskill and enrolled in a professional certificate in Data Analytics.
How would you deal with a difficult / stressful situation?
- Work can get very busy very quickly.
- Have learned to prioritise my tasks and definitely don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Learn from the action of others, especially in early days.
- Don’t take things personally, everyone deals with stress differently.
- Take on board people’s feedback.
Tell me about a time when you showed your adaptability:
- When covid hit, we were half way through semester 2 of first year.
- We quickly adapted to online learning in the space of 4 days.
- Over the next 18 months after that, we completed multiple modules and even lab work at home.
- e.g pressure sensor project, physics toolbox app.
- with work, up until a few weeks ago, we were adapting to ever changing guidelines in regards to the hospitality industry.
Tell me about a time when you used your communication skills effectively:
- Being a waitress, almost the middle man between customer and kitchen and customers and bar staff, especially when only table service was allowed.
- After the first lockdown, I worked on the door occasionally, checking people’s covid certs and ID’s.
- I used a walkie-talkie to communicate with other members of staff in other areas in regards to availability and time restrictions on tables.
Tell me about a time when you worked as part of a team:
- Start of Semester 1 in 3rd year, we had an online lab module. We were put into groups of 4 and given an assignment to design a prosthetic hand using computer aided design.
- we put our names into a hat in the interest of fairness and delegated specific tasks to everyone.
- we all knew our roles.
- I measured my hand and sent my measurements to the group so that we were all working off the same scales.
- we met up weekly to discuss any difficulties we were having / changes to be made.
- we ended up doing very well and getting a first in that assignment.
Tell me about a time when you used your problem solving skills:
- In semester 1 of this year, I worked with a partner on an interferometry lab.
- we noticed that our results weren’t showing as expected.
- I decided to take the whole experiment apart and rebuild it, leaving one element out each time.
- I noticed that the turn cog to alter the distance between elements was cracked and wasn’t turning.
- this was easily replaced and our results were corrected.
Tell me about a time when you worked in a fast-paced environment:
- Been working in a bar and restaurant for the past 2.5 years nearly, working mostly weekends and evenings around college and football.
- This can be an extremely fast paced environment, especially on match days or Friday / Saturday nights.
- I am a naturally hard worker and Ive found that I enjoy the evening rush and the day flies by.
- I also worked in Penneys and everyday before our shift, we’d have a meeting to discuss driving sales, keeping queues moving, keeping shelves restocked.
Tell me about how you’re passionate about technology and it’s future in the industry:
- Its fair to say that technology has benefited us in literally countless ways.
- wearable technology helps we improve my physical health.
- a few weeks ago I taught my nana next door how to put her covid cert on her phone and how to use FaceTime to call relatives.
- I regularly like to improve my coding skills as we didn’t have any programming modules this year. Ive done a few courses on linked in and solo learn.
What is your experience with code?
- 1st year secondary school - Scratch
- 1st year college - python
- 2nd year college - undertook advanced programming, talk about language project.
Also used Arduino hardware and software to build sensor circuits with pulse width modulation to fade in and out an LED.
Also had a least squares fitting project using python and compared results to excels.
Used C++ and python for an electronics project to investigate the speed of liquid flowing under gravity.
Tell me about a time when your integrity and ethics were questioned / a problem raised in work?
- Integrity is all about standing up for what you believe in and I think its very important to always be ethical, even when under pressure and never compromise any standards.
- In work a few months ago, I witnessed a colleague continuously give free drink to a certain table.
- I asked her about it In a casual way and she lied.
- I was obviously in two minds about it because she would’ve been my closest colleague but I knew I had to say it to management.
- She did face disciplinary action but I’m glad I stuck to my value by not protecting her dishonesty.
Tell me about your planning or organisational skills.
- always like to get ahead at the start of each semester.
- I write down every single deadline I have for every module.
- every Sunday night, I review the week ahead so I know exactly where I need to be and when and what needs to be done.
- I think its extremely important to have a work/life balance and this boils down to organisation too.
- last year, I balanced college Monday to Friday, football 3 times a week, work on the weekends while still having time to see my family and friends.
- I think its very important to schedule in regular breaks because otherwise burnout is inevitable.
Tell me about how you meet deadlines under tight time constraints:
- like to split up larger tasks into smaller weekly tasks to help me stay on track and accountable for myself.
- I prioritise earlier due dates or those with more credits and try to get everything finished at least a day before they’re due to give me a full day to review everything before submitting.
