Q

social support as a buffer for marital difficulties

A

Wang et al., 2023- A study conducted in China examined the relationships between perceived social support, marital satisfaction, maternal postnatal attachment, and postpartum stress among 406 postpartum women. The findings revealed that higher levels of perceived social support were associated with increased marital satisfaction and stronger maternal-infant attachment. These factors, in turn, were linked to lower levels of postpartum stress. The study concluded that social support directly influences postpartum stress and indirectly affects it through enhancing marital satisfaction and maternal attachment.

A simple critical analysis point for this study is that it relies on self-reported data, which may introduce bias. Participants’ perceptions of social support, marital satisfaction, and stress might be influenced by subjective interpretation, social desirability, or mood at the time of reporting. Additionally, causation cannot be established since this is a correlational study—while social support is linked to lower postpartum stress, other unmeasured factors (such as personality traits, financial stability, or cultural influences) may also play a role.

Q

social support 2-

A

Hoiseni et al., 2023 - Research involving 75 couples after the birth of their first child investigated the relationship between social support, marital satisfaction, and postpartum depression. The study found a significant inverse relationship between social support and depression in both men and women. Additionally, higher marital satisfaction was associated with lower depression levels. These findings suggest that adequate social support and marital satisfaction can mitigate the risk of postpartum depression

Q

Percey 2004- some parents never recover from the marital stress of a child- ultimately ending in divorce or seperation

Behavioral Changes: Children may exhibit increased behavioral issues, including aggression, defiance, and difficulties in school.

Emotional Distress: Feelings of anxiety, sadness, and confusion are common among children experiencing parental divorce.

Social Difficulties: Some children may struggle with forming and maintaining friendships, leading to social isolation.

Long-Term Relationship Effects: Exposure to parental divorce during childhood has been linked to challenges in forming intimate relationships in adulthood, particularly among women (Mostenen 2011)

traingulation- Bowen = Triangulation: When marital communication deteriorates, parents may involve their children in their conflicts, a process known as triangulation. This can place undue emotional burden on the child and disrupt healthy parent-child communication.

Modeling Negative Behaviors: Children often emulate their parents’ communication styles. Exposure to hostile or ineffective marital communication can lead children to adopt similar patterns, hindering their ability to engage in constructive dialogues.
