Intervals Flashcards
What is an interval
An interval is the distance between two notes
What is a melodic interval
When the notes of an interval are played one after the other, the interval is called Melodic
What is a harmonic interval
When the notes of an interval are played at the same time the interval is called a harmonic interval
What are the perfect intervals
The intervals that are classified as perfect intervals are : unison, fourth, fifth and the octave
What are classified as major intervals
The intervals that are classified as major intervals are : Second, Third, Sixth and Seventh
How is an interval recognized to be either a major or perfect interval
To recognize an interval to be either a major or perfect interval first consider the bottom note of the interval as the tonic of a major scale. If the the top note is a member of the scale of the bottom note it may be considered either a major or perfect interval
What is a minor interval
A minor interval is a semitone smaller than a major or perfect interval
How do you determine whether an interval is major or minor
: To determine whether an interval is a major or minor interval first consider the bottom note as the tonic of a major a scale. If the bottom note is a member of the major scale from the bottom note but one semitone smaller then it may be considered to be a minor interval
How is a major interval made into a minor interval
A major interval can be made minor by raising the bottom note by one semitone
What is an augmented interval
An augmented interval is one semitone larger than a major or perfect interval
How can a perfect or major interval be converted into an augmented interval
A perfect or major interval can be made augmented by raising the top note or lowering the bottom note by one semitone
What is a diminished interval
A diminished interval is one semitone smaller than a perfect interval or a minor interval
how is a perfect interval changed into a diminshed interval
A perfect interval can be made diminished by lowering the top note or raising the bottom note by one semitone
How do you name an interval when the lowest note of an interval is not the tonic of a major key
You can name an interval when the lowest note of an interval is not the tonic of a major key by first bring the bottom note down by one semitone to the tonic of a major scale and name the interval. thirdly return to the bottom note to the original state
What are the two ways to invert an interval
The two ways to invert an interval are to either to move the top note of the interval down or to move the bottom note of the interval up
