What is an interval?
Measures the distance between two notes
Why intervals?
We identify intervals because it helps us identify chords and scales
How do we find the interval?
We picture notes a-g in a circle and count number of notes inclusive
What is interval quality?
Whether there is a whole or a half step between notes
When is there a whole vs a half step?
It is a whole step when there’s a black key in between. There is a half step between all keys whether from black to white or white to white
What is a major second interval?
One in which there are two half steps or one whole step
What is a minor second interval?
When there’s one half step
What is a major third?
Two whole or four half steps
What is a minor third?
One and one-half whole steps or three half steps
What is a perfect fourth?
Two and a half whole or five half steps
What is an augmented fourth?
Three whole or six half steps
What is different about fifth intervals compared to seconds, thirds, fourths, sixths, and sevenths?
They are defined in terms of perfects, diminisheds, and augmenteds
What is a perfect fifth?
3-1/2 whole, or 7 half steps
What is a diminished fifth?
3 whole or 6 half steps
What’s an augmented fifth?
4 whole or 8 half steps
