What is intersectionality?
Intersectionality refers to the ways in which different social categories interconnect and overlap, causing complex systems of discrimination or disadvantage
How do identities intersect?:
Explain Kimberlé Crenshaws theory - race and gender
This term intersectionality was coined by the black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw.
Her arguments were based off of 3 legal cases that dealt with issues of both racial discrimination: the law forgot that the black women are both black and female, so discrimination was based both on race and gender
How do identities intersect:
Explain Sontag - age and gender
Sontag (1987) suggested that there is a double standard of ageing especially in television, whereby women are required to be youthful throughout their media careers but men are not.
For example the newscaster, Moira Stuart was a victim of ageism as she was ‘retired’ by the corporation at age 58, whilst make David Dimbleby (age 79) were allowed to carry on post retirement age

Explain Ghazala Bhatti - Ethnicity and gender
Ghazala Bhatti found in British Asian families, Izzat , or family honour was taken seriously with emphasis being placed on behaviours of daughters.
Bhatti found mothers saw family roles as important - motherhood and child rearing was regarded as the most important role and duty in life
How do identities intersect?:
Explain Yvette Taylor - sexuality and class
Yvette Taylor studied experience of working class lesbian parents
She found participants found it difficult to consult with professional e.g teachers/ doctors to help their children
Also support systems for working class children were not welcoming to lesbians
