Theme or main idea
The poem conveys messages or intentions of the poet either explicitly or implicitly
- The poem can be a narrative poetry which tells a story
- or it can be a lyric poetry which describes the personal feelings of the poet
Form –> structure
- stanzas can portray a distinct rhythm
- or the poem can be in free verse
- form and structure manipulates the haste of the poem
- poets also use ‘poetic licence’ to depart from restrictions and express themselves more effectively
Diction
-the poets choice of words creates the mood/atmosphere and gives a sense of context
**What the poet leaves out of the poem is just as important
What are effective techniques used in the diction of poetry?
- Jargon (words that belong to a particular group or specialisation are hard to understand)
- Slang
- Repetition
- Connotation
Figurative techniques
makes use of comparisons and suggestive ideas
What do figurative techniques include?
they are creative and imaginative devices that are metaphorical or representational
includes: similes, metaphors, personification, symbolism, alliteration, onomatopoeia and assonance
to shape meaning
Tone
The tone of the poem reveals the poet’s subjective views and attitudes
How is tone achieved in poetry?
through word choice as well as the rhythm and sounds of the words
How do you describe tone in poetry?
friendly sharp sarcastic ironic angry humorous condescending
Imagery
creates word pictures which affect us emotionally and intellectually
What is the effect of a slow rhythm?
to reinforce a sombre meaning, a sense of calmness
what is the effect of a quicker paced rhythm?
Reflect an adventurous mood, a sense of urgency
How does rhythm affect a poem?
it intensifies the communication of the poet’s ideas and passions by creating pleasant or unpleasant sounds which help to convey the poet’s message
