Internet Basics Flashcards
What is a bit?
A unit of opposites; binary code; atoms of information.
How many bits are there in a byte?
8
How many bytes are there in a kilobite?
1000
How many kilobytes are in a megabyte?
1000
What are the methods of bit transmission?
Electricity, light, and radio waves.
What is bandwidth?
The transmission capacity, measured by bitrate.
What is a bitrate?
The number of bits per second a system can transmit.
What is latency?
The time it takes for a bit to travel from sender to receiver.
What are the types of transmission cables?
Ethernet, fiber optic cable, and wi-fi.
What are the pros and cons of ethernet?
It’s a cheap, wired connection that uses electricity, but there is a lot of signal degradation after a certain distance.
What are the pros and cons of fiber optic cables?
It’s a fast wired connection that uses light, so there’s no signal degradation after a certain distance and travels faster than electricy. However, it’s expensive and hard to work with.
What are the pros and cons of wi-fi?
The signal uses radio waves, so it’s wireless, but there’s signal degradation after a certain distance.
Do networks use mostly wired systems or wireless systems or both?
Networks are normally comprised of both wired and wireless systems.
What is a protocol?
A well-known set of rules and standards used to communicate between machines.
What is an internet protocol?
A protocol used to access the internet.
