Internet Flashcards
IP Address
Internet Protocol: unique set of numbers that identifies each computer using the internet protocol to communicate over a network
DNS
Domain Name System: Applies a name to an ip address that people can read. Translates DNS to IP so computer can read.
Router
Forwards data packets between network computers.
Packet
information broken up into bites for easier transportation across a network. Each packet contains vital information regarding the sender/receiver, how many other packets complete the information, etc.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol
TCP
Transmission Control Protocol: Responsible for packetizing data. Header info, sequencing, and error checking
IP
Internet Protocol: responsible for transport over internet (origin/destination info)
What is a control channel?
a cell tower that is always in contact with your mobile phone: alerts your phone of incoming calls, sets up frequencies for calls, and enable the flow of messages between towers
Server-Client Model
Server: Computer that performs tasks (Web, mail, database, backup, etc).
Client: Computer that makes the work requests
P2P Network
Peer-to-Peer: Connected directly to another computer, no central server, each machine is server&client
P2P vs Server-Client
P2P: All resources shared by all peers, more reliable (server breaks down, whole network is down), no extra system admin as everyone is responsible for own machine.
More probe to malware because no central security, prone to copyright violation because regulations are set/practiced by individual usuers
HTTP:
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: transmits data over the internet via world wide web.
Hypertext: Structured text that uses Hyperlinks between nodes.
