Internet Flashcards
secondary memory
A type of memory that allows a user to store data and programs for as long as desired, in, for example, a hard disk drive.
packet
a small amount of data sent over a network; includes source and destination
computer networks
a groups of interconnected computing devices capable of sending/receiving data; a type of computing system
computer system
a group of computing devices and programs working together for a similar purpose
packet switching
the “message” is broken up into packets and sent in any order, it’s the receiver’s job to reassemble the pieces
path
a connection between two computing devices on a network
routing
the process of finding a path from sender to receiver
bandwidth
the max amount of data that can be sent in a fixed amount of time on a comp. network; bits per sec
protocol
an agreed-upon set of rules that specify the behavior of a system
internet engineering task force (IETF)
manages the development of standards and technical discussions concerning the internet in an open and collaborative process
open systems interconnect (OSI)
the layers you have to go through communicate (7 groups of protocols
transmission control protocol (TCP)
makes a common standard for how to send messages between devices on the internet
fault tolerance
the ability for a computer to recover from a broken path
redundancy
the inclusion of extra components that can be used to mitigate failure of a system if the other components fail;
system tasks
the fact that that the operating system has dozens of tasks, like scheduling what it will be doing next; managing hardware, working with the network, etc
