What is Humanitarianism?
-Belief in the value of human life and providing assistance/treatment to those who are in need of it.
-One of the main reasons nation-states get involved in international affairs.
-Not just repsonding to disasters, long-term economic and social devleopment, strong emphasis in Canada’s foreign policy
What is Unilateralism?
“I will do it alone”
ONE nation acts on its own (can be aggressive or gentle)
What is Bilateralism?
“We will do something about it”
TWO nations act together for a common goal. Normally occurs as forms of trade partnership. Sometimes act together against a common threat
What is Multilateralism?
“Lets all do something about it”
Serveral countries working together to solve an issue
What is Supranationalism?
“Lets come together under a common government for our mutual interests”
MANY nation-states come together for decisions of an international organization. Independent states give up some of their power to a central power who makes decisions
What is the UN?
United Nations-Intergovernmental organization created to promote international co-operation and peace made up of 193 member states.
Was created as a replacement for the League of Nations.
What are the goals of the UN?

What is the EU?
European Union-a supernational and intergovernmental organization consisting of 27 European member states joined in a political and economic union
What are the goals of the EU? (3)
-Mobility, Growth, Stability, and One Currency
-Human Rights and Equality
-Transparent and Democratic Institutions
