why are businesses so powerful?
some have enough MONEY to OWN COUNTRIES, therefore they can IMPACT LEGAL AFFAIRS. can ‘blackmail’ countries (ex. you owe debt and the bank tells you to vote a certain way)
what are IGOs?
INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS. groups of government who ‘TEAM UP’ together (avengers of nations). there is usually a TREATY that is signed by all members (acts like a Charter) IGO examples: UN, NORAD, NATO
what is the UDHR?
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION of HUMAN RIGHTS. established FUNDAMENTAL human rights that are UNIVERSALLY PROTECTED world wide. not legally binding, but punished morally or economically (its the international CRF)
what are regional and specialized organizations?
occur within a REGION and have a SPECIFIC FOCUS and OBJECTIVES ex. european union, african union, G7
what is the arctic council?
IGO, LEADING INTERGOVERNMENTAL FORUM that promotes cooperation, coordination and interaction among ARCTIC STATES and INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. an economic environmental IGO (canada is a part of it)
what are NGOs?
NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION. NOT affiliated with a GOVERNMENT agency. usually for CHARITABLE ideas. aim is to stop human rights violations, run by civilians and donations
what is amnesty international?
NGO, works to RELEASE POLITICAL PRISONERS, fights for HUMAN RIGHTS
what is health and humanitarian aid?
NGO, focuses on providing MEDICAL and HUMANITARIAN RELIEF. Ex. red cross, WHO, etc.
what are environmental NGOs?
NGOs that focus on the HEALTH and WELL BEING of the ENVIRONMENT ex. greenpeace
what are sports NGOs?
goal of PROMOTING SPORTS for all ex. the IOC (international olympic committee)
what are international economic organizations (NOT IEOs)?
goals are global ECONOMIC GROWTH through TRADE, encouragement of DEVELOPMENT in poorer nations, and keeping individual countries ECONOMIES STABLE. however they often prioritize business ex. world bank
what is GATT and the WTO?
WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION and GENERAL AGREEMENT on TARIFFS and TRADE. a TREATY between countries on the rules of WORLD TRADE. aims to REDUCE trade BARRIERS (tariffs) and have non-dscriminatory treatment between members. governs 98% of world trade
what does OPEC do?
COORDINATE the PETROLEUM POLICIES of member countries, ensure stable OIL PRICES and SUPPLY (organization of the petroleum exporting countries)
what does OECD?
connected to NATO, BRIDGE GAP between INDEPENDENT and GOVERNMENT BUSINESSES (ensures good interaction), deals with ECONOMICS? (organization for economic cooperation and development)
