state sovereignty
an independent entity that is recognised by other states on an international basis that has the authority to rule itself
international customary law
● Not contained in a written document, based off tradition and common practices which are accepted by the international community
● It is still not considered law unless state accepts that it is binding
declarations
International instruments that state and clarify parties positions on
particular issues, but do not impose legally binding conditions to abide
e.g. Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1943

international courts & tribunals
main principle behind international courts and tribunals is the commitment to resolve disputes between states by peaceful means. There are a number of international courts and tribunals in the world, some operate under the frameworks of the United Nations, whereas others operate independently
International Court of Justice
established in 1945 and its principal activities are to settle disputes submitted to it by states and to give advisory opinions on legal questions submitted by the General Assembly, the Security Council, or other bodies as permitted by the General Assembly.
intergovernmental organisations
● Organised groups of states established to pursue mutual interests
● Subsidiaries of the UN and make decisions on international issues e.g refugees
● International Labour Organisation - safety of workers
● Regional organisations have a role in decision making e.g European Union
non-government organisations
● Based on common interests and aims with non governmental relations
● Enforce action through informing the public
● Contributed to areas such as world peace, disaster relief
