How does healthcare spending and outcomes in the US compare to other countries?
the US spends more on healthcare than any other country
US spending on health is more than most countries spend on entire economy
consistently ranked on of the worst healthcare systems in world relative to other developed countries
Describe the characteristics of Socialized Medicine
healthcare financed and provided by government
government employs healthcare practitioners, owns healthcare facilities, and administers healthcare systems
*also called Beveridge model

single payer, government run, universal health insurance
care mostly delivered by non-profit hospitals

-most hospitals are nonprofit and privately owned
*each province/territory has a different health insurance plan(like MEDICAID)

- world’s oldest national healthcare system
-no comprehensive national health plan
-requires employers and employee to obtain PRIVATE health insurance
-each plan provides comprehensive coverage
-majority of services are free at point of service
-utilizes reference pricing when it comes to prescription medications
Compare drug policies in other countries with the United States
in other countries, we have government negotiating prices of drugs ON BEHALF of the country, they decide on a NATIONAL formulary and they decide on patient cost-sharing. Heavy government involvement in drug pricing and payment
in US, it is left up to each individual insurer to negotiate discounts, coverage and patient cost sharing. little to no government involvement
Why does the US spend more on healthcare
-pay doctors nearly double that of other countries(specialists make even more)
-US spends double the amount per person on pharmaceuticals than other countries
-8% spending on administrative costs v. 3% in other countries
