Located in West Sudan in Africa
Tension between black African farmers and nomadic Arabs
Feb 2003 rebel groups SLA and JEM attack government for oppressing BlAfFarm
Caused also by disagreements over local resources
Gov responds with army and police
Attempts at resolution
UN enter in 2007 after being denied at first
May 2006 ceasefire between gov and SLA but JEM rejected
Feb 2010 ceasefire with JEM but failed shortly after as gov airstrike areas
June 2011 peace treaty with all rebel groups except SLA and JEM so fighting continues
Social impacts
300,000 killed by 08 by war famine and disease
2.7 mil refugees
Murdering farmers and land means less food so malnutrition
Environmental impacts
Desertification around refugee camps as vegetation is taken for fuel
Increased pressure on local resources as firewood used up
Deforestation 52,000 trees
Wildlife hunted and disturbed by bombs
Economic impacts
Total cost unknown but estimated to be billions- Sudan poor anyway
Conflict prevented economic growth in the region
Conflict contributes to widespread poverty and slowed development of the region
Rebuilding infrastructure has very high costs
