Internal Processes Flashcards
What are divergent plate boundaries?
A type of plate boundary where two plates move away from each other, magma from the asthensphere rises from between the two plates, creating vents that spill lava onto the surface to develop islands.
What are convergent plate boundaries?
Also known as destructive plate boundaries, two plates move toward each other, sandwiching rock and sediment between them to form mountains, trenches, and other major landforms with the help of some volcanism.
What are transform plate boundaries?
A plate boundary where two plates grind against one another laterally, creating high levels of seismic activity and triggering nearby faults.
What is a midocean ridge?
What happens in an oceanic-continental tectonic plate?
The oceanic plate sinks below the ,continental plate because it is more dense and subducts, which creates a mountain range from the buildup of magma.
What happens in an oceanic-oceanic tectonic plate?
The less-dense plate subducts, creating an entrenchment, and then melts into magma that turns into islands when released.
What is a composite volcano?
This volcano is tall, steep-sided, conical, composed of alternating layers of ash, volcanic ash, and lava, with viscous lava that during an eruptio explodes with a mix of other debris as a pyroclastic flow.
