Internal Med #1 Flashcards
what is the goal of a Basic Action Plan?
maintain oxygenation of the brain until help arrives
how do you position the patient in a basic action plan?
conscious - any comfortable position
unconscious - supine with legs elevated above the heart
how is oxygen delivered to the patient?
consious - nasal annula
unconsious - bag-valve mask
single most important injectable drug in an emergency kit?
epi
when is epi used?
CV and respiratory manifestations of acute allergic reactions
(epi pens)
is a histamine blocker that is used for mild or delayed-onset allergic reactions (less severe than use with epi)
diphenhydramine (benadryl)
treatment of choice for acute chest pain
nitroglycerin (sublingual tablet/spray)
what does nitroglycerin do?
relaxes vasculature smooth m, reduces venous return and decreases SVR. this results in reduced myocardial oxygen consumption
what happens if there is no relief after giving nitroglycerin for acute chest pain?
concern for MI
what are the contraindications for nitro?
hypotension (makes sense)
prescribed meds for erectile dysfunction
albuterol
bronchodialator that is used to treat acute bronchospasms
beta-2 adrenergic agonist
what is glucose used for?
treat hypoglycemia
consious - oral carbohydrate (OJ, cake icing)
unconscious - BLS and EMS

what are the contraindications for aspirin?
aspirin allergy
severe bleeding disorder
aromatic ammonia
respiratory stimulant used with syncope
