Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
Shapes of molecules, Intermolecular forces, polarity, VESPR
How many lone pairs does linear shape have?
2
How many lone pairs does tetrahedral shape have?
0
How many lone pairs does pyramidal shape have?
1
How many lone pairs does v-shaped/ bent shape have?
2
How many lone pairs does trigonal planar have?
0 - but only three bonded pairs
How many lone pairs does linear (that doesn’t obey octet rule) have?
0 - but one or two bonded pairs
What shapes don’t obey the octet rule?
trigonal planar and linear.
What is Dipole-Dipole forces?
Where to molecules with permanent dipoles attract each other, the negative dipole of one molecule attracts the positive dipole of another
What is Dipole-induced dipole forces?
Where the temporary imbalance of one molecule induces a dipole in a neighbouring molecule causing an attraction
What is Hydrogen Bonding?
What is the VESPR theory?
Based on the theory that electrons in the valence shell of an atom repel each other, which can be used to predict the shape of a molecule.
How does electronegativity affect intermolecular forces?
How does polarity affect intermolecular forces?
