Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
Define Molar Mass
Mass in grams of one mole of a certain substance.
Define Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons.
Define Ionic bond
Transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction.
Define Covalent bond
Sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms.
Define Non-polar covalent bond (Pure covalent)
An equal sharing of electrons.
Define Polar covalent bond
Unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming. This is the result of a difference in electronegativity between the atoms.
Define Metallic bonding
The bond between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Define Intramolecular bond
A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules.
Define Intermolecular force
A force of attraction between molecules, ions or atoms of noble gases.
Define Kinetic energy
The energy an object has as result of the object’s motion.
Define Kinetic-Molecular theory
All matter consists of small particles which move continuously. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of which matter consists.
Define Viscosity
The resistance to flow shown by all liquids and gases.
Define Evaporation
When high energy molecules escape from the surface of a liquid into the gas phase.
Define Vapour Pressure
The pressure that an enclosed gas will exert on the surface of the liquid in a closed container.
Define Boiling Point
The boiling point is the temperature at which the vapour pressure is equal to the atmospheric pressure.
