Intermittent Pneumatic Compression - Lecture 4 (modalitites) Flashcards
What 4 things is Intermittent Pneumatic compression used for (4)
Patients w/ circulatory conditions
Edema control
Prevention of blood clots
Lymphatic drainage
What are the 5 indications for IPC?
1) Edema
2) Prevention of thromboembolism
3) Peripheral Artery disease
4) Venous Statis Ulcers
5) Lymphedema
Compression is better than cold for helping edema
KNOW: w/o preventitive measures 80% of pts who get orthopedic surgery done would develop VTE
does IPC increase the risk of bleeding?
No
KNOW: IPC is good for people w/ neurlogic conditions (stroke / spinal cord pts who cant move limbs so wont have good BF through that area –> this helps)
IPC helps prevent blood clots
Helps w/ peripheral artery disease. eventially this leads to intermittent cluadication. Can lead to limb ischemia (limb loss)
this pumps that blood along and lets you keep that limb
mimics arterial pump
KNOW: IPC Helps from Venous statis ulcers
* ulcers that occur from prolonged venousn insufficeny
* Risk factors of having Statis Ulcers is obesity, calf muscle pump dysfunction, pregnancy, immobility
* IPC momics calf msucle pump
* UPC can decrease venous pressure and intersistial edema as well as decrease wound healing time
IPC helps w/ lymphedema
* high prevalance in female population with those w/ gyneological / breast cancer
* IPC can faciliatea pymphatic drainage into trunk
Contraindications for IPC
* Acute pulmonary edema (IPC can resturn intersitial edema back to venous circulation this can increase stress on heart and lungs)
* Congestive heart failure - CVD already wokring hard dont need icnreased stress there
* Recent/Acute DVT (DVT can dislodge)
* Acute fracture: malunion / elayed healing
* Uncontrolled hypertension (IPC may elevate BP and icnrease vascular laod to heart)
Precaustions
* Recent skin graph (interfere w/ adherence)
* Acute local deramtaological infection - spread or worsen infection
* Impaired sensation or mentation (injury lack of pt feedback)
Clinical Procedures for IPC
clinci procdesures for IPC
KNow recommendations for DVT’s
* Know DVT and Lymphodema (she said don’t memorize everything)
* know the ranges / know DVT is a lower compression / treatment time
* know the difference betweenthe two and the averages
