Intermediate Sanctions Flashcards
Intermediate Sanctions are
the use of several community-based correctional sanctions in lieu of other more traditional sanctions, such as imprisonment and fines.
Philosophy behind Intermediate Sanctions
If judges are offered a well planned alternative to imprisonment for offenders who appear to represent little or no continuing threat to the community, the likelihood of a prison sentence is reduced.
Advantages of Intermediate Sanctions
Less expensive Socially coast effective Provide flexibility in terms of Resource Time of involvement Place of service
What are the three forms of Intermediate Sanctions
Split sentencing
Shock probation/parole
Shock incarceration
Split sentencing is
Explicitly requiring the convicted offender to serve a period of confinement in a facility, followed by a period of probation
NOT AVAILABLE IN ALL JURISDICTIONS.
What is Shock Probation/Parole
Offender must spend a period of time in confinement (prison more so than jail) and is then released on probation BUT the offender has to apply for probationary leave and cannot be certain of the judges decision.
What is Shock Parole
Similar to shock probation is it an administrative decision ordered by a parole authority.
Parole authority grants the release of an offender hoping that their brief exposure to prison has reoriented their lives Ina positive direction.
What is Shock Incarceration
“Boot-camp” style incarceration facilities to impress on the convicted offender the realities of prison life.
Highly well-ordered environments involving strict discipline, physical training, and hard labor.
THEIR IMPACT ON OFFENDER RECIDIVISM IS INSIGNIFICANT
What is Mixed Sentencing?
Requires convicted offender to serve weekends in confinement (usually jail) while under probationary supervision in the community.
Other types require offender to participate in treatments or do community service while on probation.
What is Community Service?
Offenders must spend part of their time working for a community agency.
Usually for minor offenses
What is Intensive Probation Supervision
Type of probation supervision that requires frequent face to face meetings.
Designed to achieve control over offenders in the community who would otherwise go to prison.
IPS caseloads are much lower than the national average of probation caseloads
What is Home Confinement?
Offenders are legally ordered to remain confined in their own residence (house arrest).
Makes use of remote location monitoring.
Community Corrections is?
the use of a variety of officially ordered program-based sanctions that permit convicted offenders to remain in the community under conditional supervision as an alternative to an active prison sentence.
