Antithesis
Contrast or opposite; Pairs exact opposite or contrasting ideas in a parallel grammatical structure
Climax
Figure of speech where words, phrases, or clauses are arranged in order of increasing importance
Asyndeton
Excludes conjunctions (and, or, but, for, nor, yet, so) to add emphasis
Polysyndeton
Several coordinating conjunctions are used in succession to achieve an artistic effect
Synecdoche
The word for a part of something is used to refer to said thing itself OR (less commonly) the word for a thing itself is used to refer to part of that thing
Apostrophe
A poetic phrase or speech made by a character adressed to a subject that isn’t literally present
Chiasmus
Words, grammatical constructions and/or concepts are repeated in reverse order
Polyptoton
Repetition of words derived from the same root
Sympolce
Simultaneous use of anaphora and epistrophe in the same line(s), phrase(s) or sentence(s)
Epanalepsis
Emphasis in which the same word or words both begin(s) and end(s) a phrase, clause or sentence
Anadiplosis
Doubling back; the rhetorical repetition of one or more words; specifically, repetition of a word that ends one clause at the beginning of the next
Epizeuxis
A word or phrase is repeated in immediate succesion, without any intervening words
Metonymy
The word for one thing is used to refer to something related to that thing
Hypophora
Figure of speech where a character poses a question before answering said question
Karios
A category of rhetorical devices in which time has come for a particular idea or action.
